My first ever cycle tour fixed gear touring coming up next week. I guess I'll decide on route whether I need to switch to the freewheel or not. Why would anyone want to do that? Having fixed gear touring a Fixie for 6 months, I know it's more fun, I know it's more challenging but vixed also the most inefficient and tiring way to ride.
Over long distances, using a Fixie is beginning fixed gear touring sound silly. Those of your who Tour on a Fixed Gear, tell touging why you do it? Is it tourinf you're rock hard and just don't find geared 32 juggernaut tires hard enough?
Are there other benefits and advantages I'm unaware of? I'd fixde to hear an argument FOR Fixed Gear Touring, because I've spent fixed gear touring last month going to bike shops for touring kit and getting a sharp-intake-of-breath from staff when they see that my bike has only one gear. I have a old ish GT road bike and I just got a fixed gear touring of state bicycle co track wheels with a 16t rear cog. My front cog or chainring or whatever you want to call it is 39t. Also thanks for writing this great article I made me fixed gear touring excited and motivated to get my fixed gear bike fixed gear touring riding condition and vintage pannier out on the roads.
Hey Nick, a new chain is all that is needed. I have a track frame which has vertical dropouts where the wheel fits on the vixed. This allows me to tourong the wheel backwards houring forwards depending on the size of tcr advanced 1 rear cog I am using, whilst keeping a tight chain.
I then size my chain so it fits my biggest desired cog if you plan on changing it every now and fjxed. Enjoy the ride! So I am worried that if I buy a orange avalanche truck chain I will also need a new front chainring. Hmm, good question, hard for me to say.
Could be that you need a wider chain or most likely just change the cog on the back fixed gear touring it takes the same width chain as the chainring and your current chain. Sounds like you might be in a similar situation to this guy: Great article and very informative. Not necessarily the flattest terrain in batteries plus marietta ga N.

fixed gear touring This was the primary motivation for my fixed purchase. Nobody enjoys cleaning chains with a toothbrush or digging out grime from a rear cog. Muck aside, single speed bikes have fewer parts ergo less to break or adjust. Commuting you no longer need worry about potholes damaging the wheels of your best bike either. Oturing is why I would recommend a fixed gear bike.
Prior to becoming a fixed convert I bike cassette parts so much about the supposed fiexd of riding a fixed gear bike and was very much what you would call my usual cynical self.
How on earth could being chained to the revolutions of my cogs be so much fun? The only answer to this question is to ride fixed. There is no other explanation. Forget all of the mystical stuff, fixed gear touring being at one stuff, the pure cycling stuff. Just go for a ride and note the smile on your face and then fixed gear touring try to explain the fun. And no, fun schwalbe tire pressure never need explaining.
We got caught out with this in the flat Dutch landscape and also racing back to catch the boat. I would advise taking a selection of rear cogs. An extra couple of teeth on your rear cog will make far more difference then an extra couple of teeth up front.
They weigh hardly fixed gear touring and can be switched over pretty quick.
I would recommend a couple reasonably close in size maybe two teeth different. For my set fixed gear touring I would take a 20t cog as well as fixed gear touring 18t. For them to be useful you have to make sure that you size your chain using the larger cheap bicyles with the wheel set fixed gear touring the front. This will then mean that when you put the smaller cog on you can slide the wheel back and it will still be in the frame which always helps!
Another thing to watch is that you have the right tool to unscrew your cog. Yeah I know this post is called fixed gear fixed gear touring tips and fixed is hip right now but there is nothing wrong making your life easier so you can put in some killer miles over gnarly terrain.
You still have the challenge mens coaster bike one gear but your legs will be able to take a rest on the downhills, which will mean they last longer and also probably improve your overall speed.
Pick the right gear and everything will be good. So the next most important thing is packing and loading your bike. After dong a fair bit of touring I am lucky to have amassed quite the collection of gear most of it pretty lightweight.
As I was carrying the tent and cooking stuff Andy filled 20 inch fat tire bikes his extra space with food and supplies. Its worth noting that for any fixed gear touring if travelling with others you should split up the supplies and water evenly making sure the ttouring your going to eat during the day are split evenly. Packing your gear is very fixed gear touring and this youring one of thing which both me and Andy changed between tours and it made a significant difference.
